Being at the forefront of the latest design trends is important to consider when it comes to starting a bathroom renovation project. As you’ll be investing so much time, energy and money into the process, the last thing you want is for it to feel dated within the first year of enjoying the new space. Designing a luxury art deco style bathroom is likely to always be in fashion, so you can’t go wrong when exploring this route. The style first appeared in France right before World War I and has been a classic elegant choice in homes ever since.

What is Art Deco Design?

Short for Décoratifs and sometimes simply called deco, art deco is a design style that combines modernist styles with intricate craftsmanship. The rise of geometric forms changed the game and created a style of visual arts and architecture that flourished a century ago in the United States too. In spite of tapping into modern elements, there is a slight rustic undertone (perhaps even very slight in the luxury context) as a result of the predominant use of manmade materials in decorative settings. Art deco has long flourished and will continue to do so as younger generations introduce it into their home spaces.

Start with the Walls

The key to getting art deco design right in a bathroom space is to start with the walls and ork from there. Marble is a common choice, across a range of different colours, like black, grey or white. The same goes for the floors, which should complement the walls no matter which combination you end up going with. As we mentioned, geometric patterns are at the heart of this design style. For something even more attention grabbing, try a printed wallpaper, being mindful that bathrooms are traditionally moist spaces, so not all options will tick the boxes. The overall design can be complemented by adding in simple plants like succulents - it doesn’t matter whether you go the real or artificial route here.

Practical Additions

A bathroom should always be practically designed, considering you’ll be spending a lot of time in it. Practical additions are important, but these don’t necessarily have to follow the stock standard choices for fixtures and fittings. Black vanities with marble countertops are enough to send a strong statement. Explore detailing in a way that evokes and inspires creativity when you enter the space. Brass and copper are great choices for art deco bathrooms, allowing the room to be rounded off in a way that isn’t as easy with other styles.

A Dash of Luxury

At Bella Bathrooms, we love a dash (or more) of luxury in any living space. Art deco bathrooms need at least a basic sense of luxury, style and elegance. Don’t be afraid to glam things up, by adding anything from metallic touches right through to a full-blown chandelier should you wish. Rugs and curtains can be explored to add to this as well, but be careful not to do it. At the end of the day you should be aiming for a space that’s inviting, warm and elegant, while staying practical and in fashion regardless of how you change some of the finer details in the years to come.
