Got a kitchen remodel on the cards for the new year? Amazing stuff! You’re on the cusp of introducing a refreshing new look to your living space. Whether it’s your first time doing so, or you’ve taken on a multitude of home design projects before, there’s always room to learn from the mistakes of others. Some are more prevalent than others. Today, we’re covering the top 5 most common mistakes that happen during kitchen remodelling projects, each of which can be gracefully avoided if you’re aware that they might creep into the process.

Mistake #1: ‘On the Fly’ Decision Making

Whether you’re picking a material for a cabinet or looking at a colour scheme in a showroom, it’s important not to make spontaneous decisions. These tend to happen when the process is rushed, and can lead to problems later down the line. ‘On the fly” decision making also takes away an opportunity to explore different options and find the best prices for what you’re buying. Testing samples first and taking the extra time to see how they practically fit into the space is a must, otherwise you may end up delaying the process altogether.

Mistake #2: Forgetting About Storage

A well thought out design has to include factoring in storage, as otherwise you’ll end up having to stock things in boxes, cluttering up the space. There are countless amounts of storage options to choose from, so take your time to go through a couple at least. Is one of the goals of the remodel to add more storage to the space? If so, good. You can work from this as a base, rather than trying to fit a square peg into a round hole later.

Mistake #3: Rushing the Build

Rushing the build and throwing in changes as you go is a guaranteed way to increase the chances of things going wrong, as well as to be left with a bitter feeling at the end of the project. Delays are bound to happen, so patience is important. If you go in prepared, dedicated to stick to your well considered decisions upfront, plus you have a realistic timeline in mind, everything will go as smoothly as possible.

Mistake #4: Aesthetics over Practicality

Everyone loves a beautiful kitchen, but at the end of the day it has to strike the right balance between aesthetics and practicality. You’ll be using the space every day, after all. Kitchen aisles, for instance, have to be wide enough to be able to use cabinets, appliances and cupboards effectively. You don’t want to be squeezing past anything, in spite of how good the kitchen might look when you post on Instagram.

Mistake #5: Not Enlisting a Second Opinion

The “my way or the highway” approach might work if you’re a bachelor or bachelorette, but in a family setting it’s important to get a second opinion from others using the space. The same goes for enlisting expert help and advice to gain peace of mind about your decisions. People have different strengths and skills, so why not lean on those?
