How is an under-counter basin installed?
The basin is fitted from underneath the countertop using clips, adhesive or a combination of both, with the rim sitting flush against the underside of the stone. A precise cut-out is required in the counter, finished with a polished edge that overhangs the basin lip. Because the work is detailed, installation is best left to an experienced stone fabricator or bathroom installer. Bella Bathrooms can supply cut-out drawings and templates to send to your fabricator before the stone is machined.
What waste size do under-counter basins use?
Standard basin waste size in South Africa is 32 mm, which matches the under-counter basins we stock. We recommend pairing the basin with a slotted waste if the model has an overflow hole, or an unslotted waste if it does not. Some shallower designs benefit from a low-profile bottle trap to keep clearance inside the vanity. Our consultants will confirm the correct waste and trap combination based on the basin and vanity unit you are pairing.
Do I need to mount the tap on the counter?
Yes. Under-counter basins do not include a tap hole, so the tap is mounted either on the countertop behind the basin or on the wall above it. A 35 mm tap hole drilled in the stone is standard for most single-lever mixers. For wall-mounted taps, the rough plumbing must be set before the wall is tiled. Send through the basin and tap pairing you have in mind and we will confirm spacing and projection before you order.
Which counter materials suit under-counter basins?
Engineered quartz, granite, solid surface and natural stone all support an under-counter installation. The counter needs to be thick enough to hold the basin securely, usually 20 mm or more, and the underside cut-out must be polished. Timber and laminate counters are not generally suitable as the cut edge is exposed to water and will eventually swell. Does the basin come with a cut-out template?
Many of our under-counter basins ship with a paper template, and where one is not included we can supply a CAD drawing on request. Hand the template to your stone fabricator before the counter is machined so the cut-out matches the basin lip exactly.
