Frequently Asked Questions
What GU10 lamp do I need for these downlights?
Our downlights are designed for standard GU10 LED lamps, which are widely stocked and easy to source. For bathroom installations, choose a warm white colour temperature (2700K to 3000K) for a relaxing ambient feel, or cool white (4000K) over the basin and shower for clearer task lighting. Wattage equivalents of 5W to 7W LED replicate a 50W halogen, which is the right brightness for most bathrooms. CRI 90+ lamps render skin tones and tile colours more accurately, well worth the small price premium when shaving or applying makeup at the mirror.
Are these downlights rated for bathroom installation?
Yes, with placement constraints. Standard die-cast GU10 downlights in our range are rated IP20, which is suitable for most bathroom ceiling positions outside the immediate spray zones above the shower or bath. For directly above a shower head or bath rim, you need an IP65 rated downlight specifically. SANS 10142 (the South African wiring code) defines the zones in detail, and your electrician will confirm which fittings are compliant for each position. Mix IP20 fittings around the room with IP65 over the wet zones for a fully compliant scheme.
What is the difference between fixed and tilt downlights?
A fixed downlight directs all its light straight down, which suits general ambient lighting and washing a flat ceiling evenly. A tilt downlight rotates within its bezel (typically up to 30 degrees from vertical), letting you aim the beam at a wall, mirror or feature element. Use tilt downlights to wash a feature tile wall, highlight artwork or angle light onto a vanity mirror for shadow-free face lighting. A mix of fixed and tilt fittings gives the most flexible scheme: ambient overhead plus directed accents where they earn their keep.
Can I install dimmable downlights in a bathroom?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it for evening ambience. Specify dimmable GU10 LED lamps (not all are) and pair them with a dimmer switch rated for LED loads. Older trailing-edge or rotary dimmers designed for halogen tend to flicker or fail to dim smoothly with LED. A modern leading-edge LED dimmer (Eikon, Legrand or similar) gives smooth response from full output down to roughly 10 per cent. Wire the wet-zone fittings on a separate, non-dimmable circuit for safety and code compliance.
How many downlights do I need for my bathroom?
A rough planning rule for general bathroom lighting is one 5W to 7W LED downlight per square metre of floor area, spaced roughly 1.2 metres apart and 600mm from the walls. A 3m by 2m bathroom (6 square metres) typically needs six downlights for even ambient coverage. Add one or two task-rated fittings over the basin and shower zones in addition to the ambient layer. The Bella Bathrooms & Tiles team can sketch a layout against your floor plan, balancing fitting count with switching zones for flexibility.
