Our standard porcelain slabs come in 3200x1600mm at 6.5mm thickness for walls, shower surrounds, and feature panels. The heavier 1620x3240mm in 12mm thickness is used for countertops, kitchen islands, and vanity tops where impact resistance matters. A single 12mm slab covers around 5.24 square metres, which often means a full kitchen counter can be installed with just one or two joins. Lighter 6.5mm slabs cover similar areas per piece and are easier to handle on vertical installations, but they should not be used as horizontal load-bearing surfaces.
Can large format slabs be used for kitchen countertops?
Yes. The 12mm lappato finish slabs in our Calacatta Gold, Agate Brown, and Laguna Blanca ranges are specifically formulated for kitchen worktops, vanity tops, and island faces. Porcelain is non-porous, heat resistant, scratch resistant, and impervious to acidic foods and cleaning chemicals. Do I need a specialist tiler to install large format slabs?
Yes. Large format slabs require an experienced installer with the right suction lifters, vibration tools, large notch trowels, and specific bedding adhesives. The slabs are also delivered in protective wooden A-frame crates that need vehicle access and at least three people to manoeuvre on site. What is the difference between 6.5mm and 12mm thick slabs?
The 6.5mm slabs are designed for vertical applications: feature walls, shower surrounds, fireplaces, and lightweight cladding. They install with thin bed adhesive and are easier to lift on scaffold and handle on site. The 12mm slabs are designed for horizontal load-bearing surfaces like countertops, vanity tops, and table tops where edge strength and impact resistance matter. Both formats use the same surface design, so you can match a countertop slab with a matching splashback in 6.5mm and achieve a seamless joinerless look in your kitchen or bathroom.
How are large format slabs delivered in Johannesburg?
Slabs ship in flat A-frame wooden crates with foam edge protection. Delivery into Johannesburg uses a crane truck or rigid bakkie depending on site access, and our team coordinates directly with your contractor to confirm the offload point in advance. Access must allow space to walk the crate to a sheltered location until your installer is ready.
