Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between close-couple and wall-hung toilets?
A close-couple toilet has the cistern visibly mounted directly on top of the pan, and the entire unit sits on the floor. It is straightforward to install, easy to service, and well-suited to traditional, transitional and budget-conscious bathrooms. A wall-hung toilet has the cistern hidden inside the wall (using a concealed cistern frame from a brand like Geberit), with only the pan visible, floating above the floor. This creates a cleaner contemporary look, makes floor cleaning easier, and visually enlarges small bathrooms. Wall-hung requires the concealed frame to be specified and installed during first fix.
What is a rimless toilet and why does it matter?
A rimless toilet (Rimfree, in Geberit terminology) is a design where the inner top edge of the pan has no traditional hollow rim. Water flushes from a redirected jet around an exposed flat surface. The hygiene benefit is significant: there is no enclosed cavity for bacteria, mould or limescale to accumulate, and cleaning is genuinely a wipe-around-the-bowl job rather than scrubbing inside a hidden rim. We strongly recommend rimless designs for any bathroom where hygiene is a priority, particularly family bathrooms and guest cloakrooms.
How does a dual-flush system save water?
A dual-flush cistern offers two flush volumes: a smaller half-flush (typically 3 to 4.5 litres) for liquid waste and a full flush (typically 6 litres) for solid waste. Compared to older single-flush systems delivering 9 to 13 litres per use, the saving across a household runs into thousands of litres per year. Dual-flush is the standard on virtually all current sanitaryware, including the Geberit, Duravit and other premium ranges we stock. Concealed cistern actuator plates make the choice between half and full flush intuitive with two clearly marked buttons.
Do I need a concealed cistern for a wall-hung toilet?
Yes. A wall-hung toilet pan does not have its own cistern, so it must be paired with a concealed cistern and a steel frame system that mounts behind the wall finish. The frame carries the weight of the toilet and any user (rated to 400kg or more on quality systems) and houses the cistern with all its valves accessible through the flush plate aperture. At Bella Bathrooms & Tiles we pair every wall-hung pan with a suitable frame and cistern, plus your chosen flush plate. Confirm wall type and available depth with your plumber before ordering, as some frames need a stud wall or boxed-out section.
Are bidets and urinals still relevant in South African bathrooms?
Bidets are increasingly specified in higher-end residential projects, either as traditional stand-alone fixtures or, more commonly now, as integrated shower toilets like the Geberit AquaClean which combines the WC and bidet in one unit. Stand-alone urinals are typically only specified in commercial installations (offices, restaurants, sports facilities) and the occasional bachelor pad. We stock both categories alongside concealed cisterns and flush plates. For advice on whether a bidet or shower toilet suits your project, our Kramerville team can walk you through current options.
