Which wall lights are safe to use in a bathroom zone?
Bathrooms are divided into installation zones based on proximity to water, and each zone has a minimum IP rating requirement. Our IP54 rated bulkhead fittings are suitable for general bathroom areas and outdoor use, withstanding splashes from any direction. For zones close to a shower or above a bath, look for an IP44 rating or higher. A registered electrician should confirm the correct zone and rating for your layout. What bulb fitting do these wall lights take?
Most of our bulkhead-style wall lights take a standard E27 screw fitting, which accepts widely available LED, CFL and halogen bulbs. Some decorative ranges use G9 or GU10 fittings. Each listing specifies the fitting type and maximum wattage, and we strongly recommend LED bulbs for lower running costs and a longer service life. If you need a specific colour temperature for vanity or task lighting, our team can recommend a bulb to match.
Can I use these wall lights outdoors?
Yes, provided the fitting carries a suitable IP rating. Our IP54 bulkheads are designed for both bathroom and outdoor use, including covered patios, entrance walls and stairwells. For fully exposed coastal locations we recommend IP65 or higher, and powder-coated or stainless steel housings to resist salt corrosion. Indoor-only decorative wall lights should not be installed externally as the electrical components are not sealed against the weather.
At what height should I mount a wall light next to a vanity mirror?
For task lighting beside a bathroom mirror, mount the fitting roughly 1.6 to 1.7 metres above the finished floor, level with the user's eyeline. Pairs of wall lights on either side of the mirror give the most flattering, shadow-free light for grooming. A single light placed above the mirror works for narrower vanities. Are these wall lights dimmable?
The fitting itself is usually dimmable, but the result depends on the bulb and dimmer switch fitted. Use a dimmable LED bulb and a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer for smooth, flicker-free operation. Standard leading-edge dimmers can hum or flicker with LEDs. Your electrician should confirm the wiring before installation, particularly in older homes where the existing dimmer may pre-date LED lighting.
