The Ageing in Style Guide

Beautiful spaces for clients who are ageing

Safe, supportive bathroom pieces that look nothing like a care home — chosen by Bella for designers and architects.

Do you want to create a beautiful space for a client who is getting older?

More of your clients are planning to stay in their homes for the long run — and many are designing for a parent, a partner with limited mobility, or their own later years. The brief is the same every time: make it safe, make it easy, but please don’t make it look clinical.

This guide shows you the best-looking pieces we stock that genuinely work for elderly and impaired users — and explains why each one earns its place.

01 Toilets

Why an elongated pan changes everything

Four elongated wall-hung pans, each noticeably longer than a standard pan, so you can match both the look of the room and the budget: Duravit’s softer DuraStyle, crisper Starck 3 or classic D-Code at 700 mm, or Geberit’s rimfree Selnova accessible pan.

Clean lines your clients expect, just designed around the body that will use it. Nobody walking into the room will read it as an “assisted” toilet.

Why elongated?

More seat, more support

The longer projection gives a bigger, more stable seat — more comfortable for longer sitting and far more secure for anyone with balance or hip issues.

Easier transfers

The extra length gives room to slide across from a wheelchair or walker, and space for a carer to assist from the side.

Height on your terms

Wall-hung means the pan sits at the seat height your client needs — not the height a factory decided. The open floor underneath is easier to mop, too.

Gentle on hands

The soft-close seat lowers itself quietly — no lifting and slamming for unsteady or arthritic hands.

DESIGN TIPPair the pan with a Bathroom Butler cistern grab rail for push-up support either side.

02 Taps

Taps that work for every hand

Blutide’s Bore Elbow Action mixers have a long, flat lever you can push with a palm, wrist or elbow: no gripping, no twisting, and one simple movement for flow and temperature.

Why an elbow-action lever?

No grip strength needed

The long, flat lever can be pushed with a palm, wrist or the back of the hand — ideal for arthritis, weak grip or reduced dexterity.

One movement, one decision

Flow and temperature on one handle is simpler to understand and control than two separate taps.

Hands stay off the tap

Nudge the lever on and off with an elbow or forearm, so soapy or unsteady hands never have to grip anything.

Tested and approved

The range is SABS tested and JASWIC approved, so it is a safe specification for homes and care settings alike.

03 Accessories

Grab rails that look like they belong

Bathroom Butler rails read as considered hardware, not hospital fittings, so support goes exactly where it’s needed without changing the feel of the room.

Why plan rails in from day one?

Falls happen at transitions

Sitting down, standing up and stepping in or out of the shower are the riskiest moments — a rail within reach at each one makes the room safer overnight.

They earn their keep twice

A well-placed Bathroom Butler rail doubles as a towel rail, so it looks intentional rather than added on.

Future-proof the walls

Even if your client doesn’t want rails yet, specify solid blocking behind the tiles at the WC, basin and shower. Adding rails later then takes an afternoon, not a re-tile.

04 Shower

The hand shower: the most important thing in the cubicle

A hand shower lets your client wash sitting down, lets a carer help without getting soaked, and keeps water off the face when they’d rather it didn’t.

Pair it with a fold-up seat from Stunning Bathroom — timber for a spa feel, acrylic for a clean, minimal look — that folds flat when nobody needs it.

Why a hand shower?

Wash sitting down

Water goes where it’s needed while your client stays safely seated — no standing under a fixed head on a wet floor.

Carers can help with dignity

A carer can direct the water without getting soaked or leaning in awkwardly.

Control over face and hair

Many older users don’t want water pouring over their head; a hand shower lets them choose.

Works for the whole household

Fitted on a slide rail, it adjusts to any height — and everyone else still gets a great shower.
