Axor Freestanding Bath Mixers

These are the floor-standing bath fillers from Axor, the premium design line of the German manufacturer Hansgrohe. They answer the case where a bath stands away from the wall with nothing behind it to hang a tap on. Six Axor ranges appear here, so the choice is partly about handle and body and partly about a decision made far earlier than most people expect.

What Floor-Standing Commits You To

A floor-standing mixer arrives in two parts. A basic set is plumbed and fixed to the unfinished floor at first fix, and the visible finish set goes on much later, once the floor and the bath are in. The Axor basic set used across most of these mixers takes an installation depth of 80 to 160 mm, and Montreux runs its own basic set rather than the shared one. The consequence is simple: the spot where the mixer rises out of the floor is fixed for the life of the bathroom, so it has to be set out against the bath before the screed goes down.

The Ranges on This Page

Axor names its ranges after the designers who drew them. Citterio and the harder-edged Citterio C come from Antonio Citterio. Starck and Starck Organic come from Philippe Starck. One is the Barber Osgerby range with the Select push control. Montreux, Uno and MyEdition come from the Stuttgart studio Phoenix Design: Montreux is the traditional one, with two handles in cross or lever form, Uno the pared-back one, and MyEdition the customisable one, topped with a plate in marble, walnut veneer, leather or glass.

Reading the Titles

Supplier titles are abbreviated and worth translating. Freest. and f/s both mean free-standing, w/o plate means a MyEdition mixer supplied without its cover plate so the material can be chosen separately, and a finish set is the visible half rather than the whole installation. BBR and BRG are the codes for Brushed Bronze and Brushed Red Gold, both spelled out in the same titles. A few, such as the Citterio floor mixer, carry a hand shower.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a freestanding bath mixer?
It is a bath filler that rises out of the floor instead of mounting on the bath rim or the wall. You need one when the bath stands clear of the wall and has no tap ledge, which is the case with most freestanding tubs. Axor builds them across several of its ranges, so the body and handle style can be matched to the basin mixer and shower controls in the same room.
How is an Axor floor-standing bath mixer installed?
In two stages. A basic set is fixed to the unfinished floor and plumbed in during first fix, then the visible finish set is fitted once flooring and the bath are in place. The Axor basic set used with most of these mixers allows an installation depth of 80 to 160 mm. Axor Montreux uses its own basic set rather than the shared one, so confirm which you need with your plumber.
Can I add a floor-standing bath mixer to a finished bathroom?
Not easily. The supply pipework has to come up through the floor, so retrofitting means lifting the floor covering and cutting into the screed to run and fix the basic set. It is far cheaper to plan it in before the screed goes down. If the bathroom is already finished, a wall-mounted or rim-mounted mixer is usually the more sensible route.
Where should the mixer stand in relation to the bath?
That is set by the bath, so fix the bath position first and mark the mixer against it. The mixer normally stands just clear of the tap end so the spout reaches over the rim without fouling it, and you want enough space around it to clean behind. Once the basic set is cast in, the position cannot be moved, so measure with the actual bath rather than a drawing.
Is Axor the same as Hansgrohe?
Axor is the premium design line of Hansgrohe, and every Axor product listed here carries Hansgrohe as its manufacturer, which is why you will see both names used together. Axor ranges are developed with named designers such as Antonio Citterio, Philippe Starck, Barber Osgerby and Phoenix Design, and they carry the wider Axor FinishPlus surface programme.
