Bathroom Butler Grab Rails

Seven grab rails, a small group, but it covers the positions that matter: beside the toilet, at the cistern, and on a straight run where someone needs something solid. They are bought for ageing in place, for bathrooms adapted after a fall, and by guesthouses and clinics. All are grade 304 stainless steel with a brushed finish, specified for grip while staying gentle on the hands, and come with expansion anchors and bolts.

The patterns, and where each one goes

The straight 300mm bars are the general purpose option. They suit a spot beside the toilet, a point in the shower where someone turns, or the wall alongside a bath, and can be set diagonally where a level run does not suit the movement. The 750mm rear rail is a longer horizontal fixing for the wall behind or beside a WC, to pull against when standing.

The cistern rails, at 670mm and 750mm, install around the cistern itself, solving the problem of nothing to hold when the WC sits tight against a wall. Bathroom Butler intends them to be paired with a dog leg rail on the adjacent wall. The dog leg is the angled pattern, one section level and one rising, so it serves a seated person pushing up and a standing person steadying themselves. It comes with two or three wall supports and also suits a shower. Both are specified for installation at 800mm from the floor.

Fixing them

The rails come with M6 expansion anchors and stainless bolts, and the dog leg has a cover plate over the screws. The wall, not the rail, is usually the limiting factor. Fix into sound masonry or a substrate with backing behind it: a rail anchored into hollow tile or unbacked drywall invites weight it cannot carry, which is worse than no rail at all. Bathroom Butler publishes no load rating or certification figure for these rails, so if you are specifying for a care facility or an accessibility requirement, confirm the number with the manufacturer first.

Finish and the wider range

Grade 304 stainless does not corrode or hold bacteria and algae, which is why it is standard here. The brushed finish is deliberate: it grips better than polished under a wet hand. The dog leg uses a 32mm tube. Six of the seven rails sit in the Assisted Living range, one in the 9100 series. See Bathroom Butler assisted living or the full Bathroom Butler range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dog leg grab rail?
A dog leg rail is bent rather than straight, with one section running level and another rising at an angle. That shape covers two movements with one fitting: a seated person pushing up from the toilet, and a standing person steadying themselves. Bathroom Butler makes it with two or three wall supports, and it can be fitted next to a WC or inside a shower cubicle.
Where should a grab rail be fitted in a bathroom?
Fit it where weight actually transfers: beside the toilet for sitting and standing, at the point in the shower where someone turns or steps over a lip, and alongside the bath. Bathroom Butler specifies 800mm from the floor for both the cistern rail and the dog leg. Watch the person who will use it move through the room first, then mark the positions.
How much weight can a Bathroom Butler grab rail take?
Bathroom Butler does not publish a load rating or a certification figure for these rails, so we will not quote one. In practice the holding capacity is set by the wall and the fixing rather than by the rail. If you need a stated figure for a care facility, a hospital or a building specification, contact the manufacturer directly and get it in writing before you order.
Can a grab rail be fitted to drywall or tiled walls?
Tiles are fine as long as there is solid masonry directly behind them, since the anchor needs to reach it. Plain drywall is not, unless noggins or a plywood pattress have been built into the wall at the rail position. If the wall is already closed up and you cannot confirm what is behind it, have an installer check before drilling rather than trusting the plug.
What is a cistern grab rail for?
It installs around the cistern of the toilet rather than on the wall beside it, which gives a handhold in reach when the WC sits tight against a wall and there is nowhere sensible to fix a conventional rail. Bathroom Butler stocks it at 670mm and 750mm and intends it to be paired with a dog leg rail on the adjacent wall for support on the other side.
