What is the difference between a full pedestal and a semi-pedestal basin?
A full pedestal basin sits on a column that runs from the floor to the underside of the basin, concealing the waste pipe and supporting some of the basin weight. A semi-pedestal, sometimes called a bottle trap cover, hangs from the wall and only conceals the trap without reaching the floor. Full pedestals work well in classic and transitional bathrooms with a more traditional feel. Semi-pedestals suit modern interiors and free up floor space for cleaning. Both options require a load-rated wall fixing for the basin itself, regardless of the pedestal.
How much wall and floor space do I need for a pedestal basin?
Allow at least 200mm of clear space either side of the basin for elbow room, and 700mm of clearance in front to use the basin comfortably. Pedestals in our range vary between 360mm and 600mm wide. The standard installed rim height is 850mm from finished floor level, which suits most adults. For a children's bathroom, drop the rim to around 760mm. Plumbing rough-ins should sit central to the pedestal column so the pedestal stands truly vertical once the basin is mounted on its concealed wall brackets.
What waste size do these basins use?
All our pedestal basins are designed for the standard 32mm South African basin waste fitting. The waste sits between the basin and the bottle trap inside the pedestal column, which then connects to the 40mm wall outlet stub. Your plumber will use a chrome P-trap or bottle trap to fit neatly inside the column. If you are replacing an existing basin, the new pedestal will likely sit over the existing plumbing without much repositioning, provided the inlet and outlet rough-ins are close to standard heights.
How many tap holes do these basins have?
Most of our basins are supplied as 1TH (one tap hole) for a single lever basin mixer, which is the most common South African specification. A few traditional models like the Atlas range are available in 3TH for separate hot and cold pillar taps. Always confirm tap hole layout before ordering your tapware, and check whether your basin includes an overflow (OF) opening. Models marked TH+OF carry both a centre tap hole and a built-in overflow, which is the ideal pairing for most modern basin mixers.
What warranty applies to your basins?
Geberit ceramic basins, including the Atlas and Selnova ranges, carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against material and manufacturing defects. Other brands in our pedestal range are covered by their distributor warranties, typically 5 years on the ceramic body. Cosmetic chips caused by impact during installation are not covered, so always uncrate and inspect basins before fitting.
