A built-in (or drop-in) bath sits inside a tiled hob or alcove and is plumbed underneath, which protects the pipework and gives a clean, integrated look. Freestanding baths sit on a finished floor as a standalone sculptural piece. Built-in baths suit family bathrooms and smaller en-suites where wall space is precious; freestanding baths read better in larger rooms where the bath is the centrepiece. What size bath fits a standard South African bathroom?
The most common built-in size in South African homes is 1700x700mm, which fits a typical bathroom alcove and seats one adult comfortably. Smaller en-suites can use 1500x700mm or 1600x700mm. For larger main bathrooms, 1700x800mm and 1800x800mm options give more shoulder room. What materials do baths come in and which lasts longest?
The two mainstream choices are acrylic (lightweight, warm to the touch, easy to repair, the everyday standard) and pressed steel (heavier, very rigid, with an enamel surface that resists scratching but is unforgiving if dropped on).
