How do matt black taps hold up to daily use and cleaning?
Quality matt black tapware uses a baked or PVD coating engineered to resist scratching, tarnishing and chemical wear. Day-to-day care is simple: wipe with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, dry to prevent water spots, and avoid anything abrasive or acidic. Steer clear of cream cleaners, bleach, ammonia and limescale removers, which will dull or strip the finish. Treat matt black as you would a quality painted surface rather than chrome, and it will hold its finish for years. Our team can recommend approved care products that are safe on the coating.
What is the difference between matt black, gloss black and gun metal?
Matt black has a soft, light-absorbing finish with no shine and reads as the most contemporary of the three. Gloss black is a polished mirror finish, which catches the light dramatically but shows water spots and fingerprints more readily. Gun metal is a darker grey-black with a subtle metallic shimmer, often brushed rather than smooth, and reads as warmer and more industrial than pure black. All three sit comfortably together in a single bathroom if you want layered tonal variation, or you can commit to one finish throughout for a more disciplined look.
Do black taps show water spots more than chrome?
Matt black actually shows water spots and limescale less than chrome in normal use, because the matt finish diffuses light and disguises minor marks. Gloss black shows them more, much like a black car bonnet does. Whatever the finish, drying taps with a soft cloth after use prevents almost all visible water marking. In areas with hard water, an occasional wipe with diluted white vinegar (lay a cloth over the affected area for ten minutes, then rinse and dry) keeps limescale at bay safely on matt finishes.
How do I coordinate black taps with other bathroom fittings?
The simplest route is to match all visible metalwork in the same black finish: basin mixer, bath filler, shower mixer, toilet flush plate, towel rails, hooks and shower drain. Most major brands offer their accessory ranges in matt black for exactly this reason. If you want to soften the look, pair black tapware with warm timber vanities, marble or travertine tile, and brushed brass hardware as an accent. For a starker contemporary read, pair with white sanitaryware and grey or charcoal stone surfaces.
Are black taps compatible with all bathroom suites?
Yes. Black tapware is a finish choice, not a system choice, so any tap will physically connect to a standard 15mm South African plumbing inlet regardless of finish. The compatibility question is more about visual coherence: matt black tapware reads beautifully against white, grey, beige and stone-effect ceramics, and against most timber vanities. It can feel jarring against heavily patterned or strongly coloured suites.
