What does a diverter mixer actually do?
A diverter mixer controls both temperature and flow, then redirects water between two or more outlets, such as an overhead shower and a handheld, or a bath spout and a shower head. Single-lever models combine the temperature handle and diverter into one body, while thermostatic versions add a fixed temperature dial. The visible trim kit, including the lever, plate and diverter knob, sits flush against the tiled wall, while the working valve is buried inside the rough-in body fitted during the wet-wall stage of construction.
What is the difference between the trim kit and the rough-in body?
Most of our concealed diverters ship in two parts. The rough-in body is the brass valve that your plumber installs before tiling, with 15mm copper inlets connected to hot and cold supplies and one or two outlets feeding the shower head and handheld. The trim kit is the decorative finish that screws onto the body after tiling. Choosing the rough-in body early in the build is critical, because the trim kits are matched to specific valve types. Pairing the wrong combination is the most common installation mistake.
Will these mixers work with low South African water pressure?
Our diverter mixers are rated for working pressures from 1 to 5 bar, which covers most South African homes. Houses fed directly from a municipal mains supply typically sit between 2 and 4 bar. If you rely on gravity from a roof-fed tank, expect 0.1 to 0.4 bar at the diverter, which is too low for a satisfying shower. A small inline booster pump installed on the cold feed solves this and brings performance in line with what the valve is designed for in everyday use.
What warranty applies to Hansgrohe diverter mixers?
Hansgrohe carries a 5-year manufacturer warranty on its diverter ranges across South Africa, covering manufacturing defects on the cartridge, valve body and finish under normal residential use. Limescale build-up, abrasive cleaning damage and installation issues fall outside the warranty, which is why we always recommend fitting a Y-strainer on the inlet if your area has hard water. Bella Bathrooms & Tiles handles warranty registration on your behalf at the point of purchase, so you do not have to chase paperwork after the install is complete.
Can I bring my contractor in to discuss the install?
Absolutely. Concealed diverter work involves coordination between the tiler, the plumber and the cabinetry team, and we routinely host contractor walk-throughs at our Kramerville showroom. Bring elevation drawings and the proposed valve positions, and our team will run through the rough-in specs, the trim alignment and the recommended sequence over a coffee.
