Drop-In Kitchen Sinks

Drop-in kitchen sinks — also known as top-mount or self-rimming sinks — are the most versatile and straightforward sink installation type available. The sink sits within a countertop cutout with its rim resting on the surface, creating a clean, secure fit that works with virtually any benchtop material. At Bella Bathrooms, our drop-in kitchen sink collection features durable, well-designed options suited to the demands of South African kitchens, from compact single bowls to generous double configurations.

Why Choose a Drop-In Sink

The primary advantage of a drop-in sink is installation simplicity. Because the rim sits on top of the counter, the cutout edges do not need to be perfectly finished — the sink lip conceals them. This makes drop-in sinks compatible with laminate, solid timber, stone, and composite countertops alike, and significantly reduces installation time and cost compared to under-mount alternatives.

Drop-in sinks are also easier to replace in future. If you upgrade your sink down the line, the existing cutout typically accommodates standard sizing, making it a practical choice for homeowners who value flexibility. The raised rim also acts as a natural barrier, preventing water on the countertop from draining into the cabinet below.

Materials and Configurations

Our drop-in range includes sinks in stainless steel — the kitchen workhorse — as well as granite composite and ceramic options. Stainless steel models offer excellent heat resistance, durability, and easy maintenance. Granite composite sinks provide a more substantial feel and are available in colours that coordinate with modern kitchen palettes. Single bowl, one-and-a-half bowl, and double bowl configurations are available to suit your cooking and cleaning habits.

Completing Your Kitchen

Pair your drop-in sink with a quality kitchen tap — pull-out mixers are a popular pairing for their extended reach over the sink surface. For those who prefer an under-mount installation instead, browse our under-counter kitchen sink range. Our full kitchen sink collection covers every installation type and material, with nationwide delivery from Bella Bathrooms across South Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a drop-in kitchen sink installed?
The sink drops into a cut-out machined in the worktop, with the rim sitting on top of the counter and a silicone bead sealing against the stone or solid surface. Mounting clips underneath hold it firmly in place. It is the most forgiving installation type for retrofit work because the rim hides the cut edge, so a fractional misalignment in the cut-out is still finished cleanly. Most kitchens can have a drop-in sink replaced in a single morning by an experienced fitter.
Should I choose stainless steel or granite composite?
Stainless steel is hard-wearing, hygienic and forgiving on dropped glassware, with a contemporary look that suits most kitchens. Granite composite, used in the Lave and Maris ranges we stock, is heat-resistant, quiet under running water and available in colours that warm the look of the room. Composite hides watermarks better than polished steel, while steel handles boiling water and heavy pots without concern. Both are excellent: the choice usually comes down to aesthetics and how often you cook.
What waste size do drop-in kitchen sinks use?
South African kitchen sinks use a 90 mm waste outlet as standard, larger than the 32 mm basin waste used in bathrooms, to handle food residue. Most of our drop-in models include a basket strainer waste in the box, and double-bowl sinks come with a connecting overflow kit. If you are upgrading from an older sink, check that your existing trap and waste pipe will connect to the new outlet position before ordering.
Are the sinks supplied with a cut-out template?
Yes. Every drop-in sink ships with a cardboard or paper template showing the exact cut-out dimensions, including the radius at each corner. Hand the template directly to your stone fabricator or kitchen installer before the worktop is machined. If a template is missing, our team can supply a manufacturer drawing. Always test-fit the sink to the cut-out before sealing it down with silicone, as a final dry fit catches any issues early.
How do I prevent scratches on a stainless steel sink?
Use a sink-bottom grid or protective mat to stop pots and pans scratching the base, and clean with warm soapy water rather than abrasive pads. Wipe in the direction of the brushed grain to maintain the finish, and rinse the bowl after washing dishes to remove acidic food residue. Avoid leaving cast iron pans soaking, as they can leave rust marks. Bella Bathrooms can recommend a finish-safe stainless cleaner when you collect your sink.
