Hansgrohe iBox Universal
What the iBox Universal is
The iBox Universal is the base set for hansgrohe concealed installations — the valve body your plumber builds into the wall at first fix, before tiling. It's been the reliable foundation for concealed showers and baths for more than 20 years. Everything you see afterwards — the thermostat, the mixer, the trim — mounts onto it. It's the hidden half of every clean, built-in shower.
How concealed installation works: base set + finish set
This is the single most important thing to understand before ordering, because it's where most mistakes happen. A concealed installation is always two parts:
- The base set — the iBox Universal. Plumbed into the wall, completely hidden.
- The finish set. The visible thermostat, mixer or trim, fitted after tiling, chosen in your design and finish.
You order both. The iBox on its own doesn't shower; the finish set on its own has nothing to fix to. Buy them together and you're covered — our team will make sure both are on your quote.
iBox universal 2 — the current generation
The current iBox universal 2 builds on 20 years of the original, refined with plumbers and planners. Its headline benefit is compatibility: it works with all current and future hansgrohe and AXOR finish sets. Older finish sets designed for the original iBox universal are still supported — you simply add a separately available adapter plate (# 13588000). One base set, an entire world of finishes, past and future.
Built for the installer
The iBox universal 2 was designed to make a concealed install faster and more foolproof:
- Integrated spirit level for precise horizontal and vertical alignment.
- Sliding sleeve that adjusts to the wall depth — no time-consuming cutting to length.
- Rotationally symmetrical — the connections are identical all round, so it can't be fitted the wrong way up.
- Waterproof with integrated water-damage protection, and ultra-quiet thanks to sound insulation (acoustic group 1).
- Flexible connections (4 × Rp ½" / DN15) plus electrical protection tubes, and it's even ready for digital shower solutions.
One base, hundreds of finishes — and future-proof
Because the finish set simply mounts onto the standardised iBox, a homeowner can upgrade the look or the functions years later without breaking open the wall or re-tiling — swap a chrome trim for matt black, or a basic mixer for a ShowerSelect thermostat, in an afternoon. That's a genuine long-term advantage to put in front of a client, and a strong reason to specify hansgrohe concealed over a cheaper, locked-in valve.
What you can put on it
Once the iBox is in the wall, you can finish it with hansgrohe's concealed finish sets — the ShowerSelect Comfort and Ecostat Comfort thermostats, the DuoTurn concealed mixer, and a wide range of concealed shower and bath trims — as well as the big overhead ranges like Rainfinity and the Rainmaker Select. hansgrohe also keeps spare parts available for up to 15 years after a range is discontinued, so an iBox installation stays serviceable for the long haul.
