Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a tile that will wear well in a busy living area?
For living rooms, hallways, kitchens and open-plan spaces, look at the PEI wear rating and slip rating together. PEI 4 or 5 porcelain handles heavy residential traffic, including dragged chairs and pet claws. A textured or matt finish hides scuffs and footprints better than a polished one in high-use family homes. Larger format tiles (600x600mm and up) make a living area feel more expansive. The team at Bella Bathrooms & Tiles will help you weigh these factors against the look you want.
Are large-format tiles practical for South African homes?
Yes, and they are increasingly the default in contemporary builds and renovations. 600x600mm, 600x1200mm and 800x800mm porcelain tiles cover ground faster, reduce grout lines and visually enlarge the room. They do require a properly flat substrate (the larger the tile, the less forgiving it is of undulations in the screed) and a tiler experienced with the format. For very large slabs, allow extra delivery and handling time as they need special transport racks.
Can living area tiles be used over underfloor heating?
Most porcelain tiles in our range are suitable for use over electric or hydronic underfloor heating, which is one of the reasons porcelain is the dominant flooring choice in renovated South African homes. The tile must be bonded with a flexible, heat-rated adhesive, and the floor heating should be commissioned slowly after installation to allow the adhesive to cure. We will confirm the rating on any specific tile and recommend the right adhesive system.
Will the floor tile carry through into the kitchen and bathroom?
It can, and a single tile run is one of the most effective ways to make an open-plan layout feel calm and unified. For wet areas (bathrooms, shower zones, exterior patios), check the slip rating on the same tile - a tile that is R10 dry-rated may need a textured companion in the shower base. Many of our living area ranges have matching tiles in different finishes for exactly this purpose.
How do I care for porcelain floor tiles long term?
Porcelain is one of the lowest maintenance flooring choices: regular sweeping or vacuuming, and damp mopping with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid wax-based polishes, which build up over time and dull the surface, and harsh limescale removers near grout. An annual grout reseal in high-use areas keeps the lines looking fresh.
