What floor type do I need for a freestanding bath?
A filled freestanding bath plus bather can weigh 250-350kg, concentrated over a small footprint. Solid concrete floors handle this with no further reinforcement. Timber-suspended floors generally need joist checks and may require additional noggins or sistering at the bath position. How do the waste and overflow connect?
Most Livingstone freestanding baths use a standard 40mm waste, exiting vertically through the floor. The overflow integrates with the waste assembly using a click-clack or pop-up mechanism, depending on the model. Position the waste accurately before tiling, as relocating it later means lifting finishes. If you are renovating an older bathroom that previously had a built-in bath, expect some plumbing relocation to align with the new freestanding position.
Can I use any tap with a freestanding bath?
Freestanding baths can be paired with floor-mounted bath mixers, wall-mounted spouts or deck-mounted taps where the bath has pre-drilled tap holes. Floor-mounted mixers are the most popular pairing aesthetically but require accurate plumbing rough-in below the slab, ideally specified before tiling. How much clearance does a freestanding bath need?
Allow at least 200mm around all sides for cleaning, and ideally 400mm or more behind the bath if you plan to clean walls or paint behind it regularly. For smaller bathrooms, a back-to-wall freestanding design saves space while keeping the freestanding look on three sides.
