Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a pillar tap?
A pillar tap is a single-handle, single-function tap that delivers either hot or cold water from one spout. Pillar taps are installed in pairs at a basin or bath: one for hot, one for cold. They suit heritage and traditional bathrooms where the period authenticity of separate hot and cold control matters, secondary basins and utility installations, and outdoor or garden taps where a single supply is all that is needed. Bib taps are the wall-mounted variant of the same single-function tap design.
What inlet size do these pillar taps use?
All taps in this collection are 15mm inlet, the South African residential standard. They connect using standard 15mm flexible hoses or rigid copper, depending on your installation. Replacement of an existing 15mm pillar tap is direct: drain the line, undo the back nut, swap the tap, and re-seal. No re-piping is required for a like-for-like swap.
Will these taps work on my home's water pressure?
Yes. The pillar and bib taps in this range are specified for the standard South African pressure range of 1 to 5 bar, covering direct municipal pressure and most gravity-fed systems. They use ceramic-disc or compression washer mechanisms depending on model, both of which tolerate the full pressure range without specialised pressure-reducing valves. For very low pressure under 1 bar, choose pillar taps with the largest spout aperture to maximise visible flow.
Can I install a pillar tap into a basin drilled for a mixer?
No. A pillar tap installs into a single 22mm to 24mm hole sized for a single tap, while a mixer either uses a wider single hole or a separate three-hole configuration. If you are converting an existing mixer basin to pillar taps, the hole pattern almost never matches, and a basin replacement is usually needed. Speak to our showroom team if you want help matching basin and tap combinations before ordering.
Where do pillar taps belong in a modern bathroom?
Pillar taps are appropriate in three contexts: an authentic traditional scheme where period detail matters, a secondary basin such as a guest cloakroom where simplicity is the point, and any utility, garden, or outdoor installation where a single supply is all that is required. They are not the right choice for a main basin in a modern bathroom: a single-lever mixer offers superior temperature control and water efficiency for primary use.
