Frequently Asked Questions
What thread size do these shower arms use?
Almost every shower arm in this collection uses the South African standard 1/2 inch BSP thread (often labelled as 15 mm), which is the same fitting used for the vast majority of overhead shower heads, exposed shower mixers and ceiling rough-ins. If you are replacing an existing arm and head, this is almost certainly the size you have. The handful of imported arms that deviate (typically 3/8 inch on some European systems) are flagged in the product specification. Bring a photo or measurement if you are unsure and we will confirm before you order.
How do I pick the right shower arm length?
The length you need depends on the diameter of your shower head and where you want the water to fall. As a guide, a 120 mm arm puts a standard 200 mm head close to the wall (suitable for over-bath shower setups where you do not want a wide spray area), a 150 mm arm gives a comfortable mid-range projection for most walk-in showers, and the longer 300 mm plus arms are best paired with large rainfall heads where you want the spray to land further out into the cubicle.
Wall mount or ceiling mount: which one do I need?
Wall-mounted arms are the most common choice and what you will get with almost every option in this collection. They plumb through an existing rough-in in the tiled wall and project the head outward at a fixed angle. Ceiling-mounted arms drop the shower head straight down from above and need a dedicated rough-in in the ceiling, planned at the construction or renovation stage. If you are renovating an existing bathroom without ceiling pipework, wall mount is the practical option.
Can I replace just the shower arm without changing the mixer or head?
In most cases, yes. Provided your existing arm uses the standard 1/2 inch BSP thread and the wall outlet is sound, you can unscrew the old arm and fit a new one with fresh PTFE tape to seal the thread. This is one of the easiest ways to refresh the look of a shower without a full reno (a brushed stainless or matte black arm in place of an old chrome one makes a surprising difference).
