Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a linear shower channel and a point drain trap?
Point drain traps are square or round fittings typically 100mm to 150mm, installed at the lowest point of a four-way slope. Linear shower channels are long slot drains (300mm to 1500mm) installed against a wall or doorway, allowing the shower base to fall in a single direction. Linear channels suit large-format tiles where four-way falls cut tiles awkwardly. Point drains remain the most economical choice for standard shower trays and smaller wet zones.
How much fall (slope) does the floor need towards the drain?
Industry guidance for wet rooms in South Africa is a fall of 1:50 to 1:80 from the perimeter towards the channel or point drain. That works out to roughly 10mm to 20mm of fall per metre. Too little fall causes pooling; too much makes large-format tiles sit unevenly. Get the screed depth and trap height right before tiling, because changing fall after the tiles are down means lifting the floor. Your tiler should set out the fall before fixing the first tile.
What flow rate do these traps and channels handle?
Standard 40mm waste outlets handle around 0.5 litres per second, which suits single shower heads up to roughly 12 to 15 litres per minute. High-flow rainfall heads, body jets or multi-outlet shower systems benefit from 50mm or larger outlets, or a linear channel with a higher flow trap. Confirm your shower system output before specifying the trap, especially for thermostatic systems running multiple outlets simultaneously.
How do I keep the hair trap and channel clean?
Most channels and point drains in the collection include a removable hair trap basket or grate. Lift it weekly, pull out hair and soap residue, and rinse under the tap. A monthly flush of hot water with a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda keeps the trap odour-free. Avoid caustic drain unblockers on chrome and stainless components: they pit the finish. If the channel is running slow, the U-bend below the trap is usually the cause.
Can someone help me specify the right channel length and trap depth?
Yes. Bring your shower layout, screed depth and finished floor build-up to our Kramerville showroom and a Bella Bathrooms consultant will help you match channel length, trap depth and finish grate to your wet room build. We will also walk through how the trap interacts with your shower head choice so flow capacity is matched front to back, and flag the screed setting-out details your tiler needs to know before the first cut.
