Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between full body porcelain and glazed stone-effect tiles?
Full body porcelain carries the colour and pattern all the way through the tile, so any minor chip on a corner reveals the same tone as the surface. Glazed porcelain has the design printed on a top layer over a neutral biscuit. For high-traffic floors, entrances, and outdoor patios, full body is the more forgiving choice. For wall installations and low-traffic bathroom floors, glazed porcelain delivers sharper detail at a lower price. Our Bella Bathrooms & Tiles team can walk you through samples of both formats in the showroom.
Can stone-effect porcelain tiles be used outdoors?
Some of our stone-effect ranges are rated R11 anti-slip and approved for external use around pools, patios, and braai areas. The rough-finish 20mm pavers in the Santa Monica family are designed for outdoor and high-grip indoor applications. Standard 600x600mm and 600x1200mm tiles are best kept indoors unless explicitly rated for external installation. South African UV is harsh, so always confirm the slip rating and frost performance for the specific tile before ordering. Outdoor projects also require more wastage for cuts around drains, gullies, and copings.
How much wastage should I allow when ordering?
For a straightforward straight-lay pattern across a regular room, add 10 percent to your measured area to cover cuts, breakages, and future repairs. For diagonal layouts, herringbone, or rooms with multiple obstacles, allow 15 percent. Large format tiles need slightly more wastage because off-cuts are harder to reuse. Always order all your boxes from the same batch to ensure colour consistency, and keep two or three spare tiles after installation for future repair work. Coverage figures per box are listed on each product page to help you calculate.
Do stone-effect porcelain tiles need sealing?
Glazed and full body porcelain tiles do not require sealing because porcelain has a near zero water absorption rate. The grout joints, however, should be sealed with a penetrating grout sealer after installation and refreshed every 2 to 3 years in wet areas. This stops staining, mould growth, and discolouration. If you choose a textured rough finish for outdoor use, occasional cleaning with a neutral pH detergent is enough to keep the surface looking new. Avoid acidic cleaners, which can dull the surface and weaken sealed grout over time.
How do I clean stone-effect porcelain tiles?
For regular maintenance, sweep or vacuum loose dirt and mop with warm water and a neutral pH detergent. Avoid bleach, ammonia, and acidic descalers on the surface and grout. For stubborn stains, a soft nylon brush with a tile-safe cleaner clears the texture without scratching. Matt and rough finishes hide footprints and water marks better than polished lappato, but both clean easily. After mopping, dry the floor in high-traffic areas to prevent water marks.
