Choosing the right size freestanding bath is the difference between a bathroom that feels luxurious and one that feels cramped. Too large and you lose floor space; too small and you lose the soaking experience you bought it for. This guide breaks down the most common freestanding bath sizes available in South Africa and helps you match the right one to your bathroom.

Freestanding Bath Sizes at a Glance

Most freestanding baths fall between 1100mm and 1800mm in length. Here is what each size range suits:

1100mm–1300mm — Ultra-Compact

These are designed for genuinely small spaces — guest en-suites, powder rooms, or bathrooms where a standard bath simply will not fit. At this size, you are looking at round or square-shaped baths rather than traditional elongated ones. The small freestanding baths in our range include options from 1100mm that work as Japanese-style soaking tubs — deep but short.

Best for: Guest bathrooms, compact en-suites, apartments

1400mm–1500mm — Compact

The sweet spot for South African bathrooms that are not huge but still have room for a freestanding piece. A 1500mm bath fits comfortably in most standard bathrooms and still offers a full-length soak for one person. This is the most popular size range in our small freestanding bath collection.

Best for: Standard-sized bathrooms, en-suites, renovations where space is fixed

1600mm–1700mm — Standard

This is the most popular freestanding bath size overall. A 1700mm bath offers generous soaking space for most adults and makes a strong visual statement without overwhelming the room. You will need a bathroom with at least 2.5m x 3m of floor space to position it comfortably with clearance on all sides.

Best for: Master bathrooms, open-plan bathroom designs, new builds

1800mm+ — Full-Size Luxury

At 1800mm and above, these baths are designed for large bathrooms where the bath is the undisputed centrepiece. Some accommodate two bathers comfortably. Bear in mind that a filled 1800mm stone bath can weigh over 400kg — check your floor loading, particularly on upper storeys.

Best for: Large master bathrooms, luxury renovations, double-height spaces

How to Measure Your Bathroom for a Freestanding Bath

Before you fall in love with a specific bath, measure your space:

1. Floor area: Allow at least 100mm clearance on each side of the bath, and 200mm from the wall for plumbing access. A 1700mm bath needs roughly 1900mm of wall-to-wall space at minimum.
2. Door clearance: Make sure the bath can physically get into the room. Measure doorways, hallways, and any tight corners on the delivery route.
3. Plumbing position: Your waste outlet position determines where the bath can sit. Adjusting plumbing is possible but adds cost — plan this early.
4. Weight: Composite stone and quartz baths are significantly heavier than acrylic. A Dado quartz bath at 1800mm may weigh 80-100kg empty and 350-400kg filled. Check floor loading capacity.

Does Material Affect Size Choice?

Yes. Acrylic baths are lighter and can be larger without floor-loading concerns. Composite stone baths from Livingstone and engineered quartz from Dado are heavier but offer superior heat retention — your water stays warm longer, which matters more in a larger bath that takes longer to fill.

Quarrycast baths from Victoria+Albert sit between the two — lighter than solid stone but with better thermal properties than acrylic.
