Wooden Floor Tiles in South Africa: Wood Look Tiles, Sizes and How to Choose the Right Ones

Wooden floor tiles give you everything people love about timber, the warm grain, the long boards and the natural variation from plank to plank, without the scratches, swelling and refinishing that come with real wood. Modern wood look tiles are printed with high-resolution images of real timber and fired into porcelain, so they read as oak, ash or walnut from across the room, yet they shrug off water, wear and muddy paws. That makes them one of the most practical floors you can choose for a South African home, from open-plan living areas to bathrooms and covered patios.

This guide explains how wood look tiles compare with real wood, laminate and vinyl, which sizes and colours work best in different rooms, and what to check before you buy, so you can choose wooden floor tiles that look right and last.

Why Choose Wooden Floor Tiles Over Real Wood?

Solid timber is beautiful, but it is a natural material that moves with its surroundings. As the Wikipedia entry on wood flooring explains, solid hardwood is prone to gapping, crowning and cupping, with planks shrinking apart or curving as humidity changes. In a coastal home, a bathroom or a busy kitchen, that movement is hard to avoid. Wooden floor tiles sidestep the problem entirely.

They handle water

Most wood look tiles are porcelain. Porcelain tile is defined by a water absorption of less than 0.5 per cent and is fired at around 1,200°C, which makes it dense, hard and frost-resistant. Water sits on the surface instead of soaking in, so a splash from the bath or a spill in the kitchen is simply wiped away. For more on why porcelain outperforms standard ceramic, see our guide to ceramic vs porcelain tiles.

They stand up to wear

Stiletto heels, dragged chairs, sand from the garden and dog claws all mark real timber. A porcelain tile's surface is far harder, and the printed grain is protected by a fired glaze, so the floor keeps its looks in busy passages, kitchens and family rooms.

They need very little maintenance

There is no sanding, oiling or resealing. A sweep and a wash with a neutral floor cleaner is all a wood look tile needs to stay looking new.

They suit underfloor heating

Porcelain conducts and holds heat well, which makes it a natural partner for underfloor heating.

Wood Look Tiles vs Laminate and Vinyl Flooring

Tiles are not the only way to get a timber look. Laminate and vinyl are popular alternatives, and each has its place.

  • Laminate uses a printed image of wood on its surface, bonded to a fibreboard core. It is warm underfoot, quick to lay as a floating floor and usually costs less, but the core can swell if water gets into the joints, so it is best kept to bedrooms, lounges and studies.
  • Vinyl is plastic formed to look like wood. It copes with moisture far better than laminate and is softer and quieter underfoot, but it is less resistant to heavy furniture, sharp objects and strong sun than porcelain.
  • Wood look porcelain tiles are the most durable and water-resistant of the three, and the only option suited to wet areas, heavy traffic and outdoor spaces. They feel cooler underfoot and need a professional tiler to lay them.

Many homeowners combine them: a timber-feel floor in the bedrooms and wooden floor tiles in the bathrooms, kitchen and living areas. Our flooring range includes laminate, vinyl and engineered wood, and our article on wood effect tiles vs laminate compares the two in more depth.

Wood Look Tile Sizes and Formats

Size does more than anything else to make a wood look floor convincing.

Planks

Long, narrow planks are the closest match to real floorboards. Our wood look tiles include plank formats of 900 x 225mm, 1200 x 200mm and 1200 x 230mm, which lay just like timber boards and suit almost any room. Longer planks also make a room feel larger and calmer, because there are fewer joints breaking up the floor.

Large format tiles

600 x 1200mm wood look tiles give a contemporary, wide-board effect with very few grout lines. They work especially well in open-plan spaces. Some, such as our colour-body porcelain options, carry the colour through the body of the tile, so an accidental chip is far less noticeable.

Square tiles

600 x 600mm tiles with a woodgrain print are among the most affordable ways to get a timber look, and they are quick to lay in kitchens, passages and rental properties.

Laying patterns

Planks look most natural in a staggered layout, like real floorboards. Tile industry guidance is to offset long planks by no more than a third of their length rather than laying them in a halfway brick pattern, because any slight bow in a long tile is most pronounced at its midpoint. For something more decorative, planks can also be laid in herringbone or chevron. Allow around 10 per cent extra for waste on a straight lay, and closer to 15 per cent for herringbone.

Choosing a Colour and Finish

Pale and whitewashed timbers

Light tones such as Urban White and Forest Sand bounce light around a room and make smaller spaces feel bigger. They pair beautifully with white walls and brushed brass.

Natural and honey oak

Warm mid-tones, like Trunk Deck Natural or Canne Honey, are the most versatile choice. They sit comfortably in both classic and contemporary interiors.

Grey and dark timbers

Grey timbers, including Legno Grigio, Rovere Grafite and the Nebraska range, suit modern interiors with black tapware, concrete finishes and crisp white sanitaryware. Darker tones such as Willow Dark Oak add drama and depth, and look best in rooms with plenty of natural light.

Why matt works best

Most wood look tiles have a matt finish, and for good reason. Matt looks closest to real oiled or lacquered timber, and it gives better grip underfoot than a polished surface, which matters in bathrooms and kitchens. Look for a tile with several different face designs too, so the grain pattern does not visibly repeat across a large floor.

Where to Use Wood Look Tiles

Living areas and open-plan spaces

Running the same wooden floor tiles through the lounge, dining room and kitchen creates a seamless, spacious feel and removes awkward thresholds between rooms. Browse our living area tiles for more options that work across open-plan spaces.

Bathrooms and en-suites

Timber-look floors bring a warm, spa-like feel to a bathroom without any of the risk of real wood. Pair them with a wooden vanity and white sanitaryware for a calm, natural scheme. For bathroom floors, choose a matt finish and ask about the slip rating before you buy, especially for walk-in showers. Explore more options in our bathroom tiles collection.

Patios and outdoor living

Some wood look porcelain is rated for outdoor use, including our Alpine and Canne ranges. That lets you carry the same look from the lounge onto a covered patio or braai area, so the two spaces flow together. Unlike timber decking, there is no rot, no splinters and no annual oiling. Always check that the tile is outdoor-rated and has a suitable slip-resistant finish, and see our full range of outdoor tiles for more choice.

Installation Tips for a Convincing Wood Look Floor

  • Start with a flat floor. Long planks show every dip and hump in the screed, so make sure the base is level and ask your tiler about a levelling clip system.
  • Keep grout lines tight and matched. A narrow joint in a grout colour that matches the tile's base tone helps the floor read as boards rather than tiles. If the tile is rectified, meaning it has been cut to precise dimensions after firing, your tiler can use an even narrower joint.
  • Mix your boxes. Shuffle tiles from several boxes as you lay them, so the grain and shade variation looks natural rather than patchy.
  • Order enough, in one go. Buy the full quantity at once so every box comes from the same batch and the shade matches.
  • Leave room for movement. Large floors and outdoor areas need perimeter and movement joints, rather than being tiled edge to edge in one unbroken sheet.
